Mutual attachment between persons, as distinguished from sexual or family affection. The Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle distinguished three levels of friendship: the useful (friendship as a common enterprise), the pleasant (friendship as entertaining companionship), and the good or virtuous (friendship as mutual esteem).
