Frith, William Powell (1819-1909)

English painter. His canvases depict large contemporary scenes featuring numerous figures and incidental detail. Ramsgate Sands (1854; Royal Collection, London), bought by Queen Victoria, is a fine example, as are Derby Day (1856-58; Tate Gallery, London) and The Railway Station (1862; Holloway College).

From 1853, possibly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, he turned to contemporary society life with great popular success, becoming the wealthiest artist of his day.
