Fritz, John (1822-1913)

US mechanical engineer who, as an early and innovative ‘iron master’, designed new machinery and introduced new techniques, such as the Bessemer process, and open-hearth furnaces. Born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, he initially worked as a blacksmith and mechanic, and by 1849 was superintending the building of the Cambria Iron Works (by 1860 the Bethlehem Iron Works) in Johnston, Pennsylvania.
