These buildings are built in the Venetian Gothic style, but are in fact in Slovenia. Italy's Friuli-Venezia Giulia region is on the western border of Slovenia, and in the southwest part of its coastline lies along the Gulf of Venice. In Venice itself the Santa Maria dei Frari is a good example of Venetian Gothic architecture, having been rebuilt in the Gothic style during the 15th century.

Province and autonomous agricultural and wine-producing region of northeast Italy, bordered to the east by Slovenia and to the north by Austria, comprising the provinces of Pordenone, Gorizia, Trieste, and Udine; area 7,855 sq km/3,033 sq mi; population (2001 est) 1,180,400. The most important industrial centres are Udine, Gorizia, the ports of Trieste (which is the region's capital) and Monfalcone (which has dockyards and chemical industries), and Pordenone. Maize, soybeans, wine, and fruit are produced on the plain, and cattle and pigs are raised on the hills.

History

Formed in 1947 from the province of Venetian Friuli and part of Eastern Friuli, to which Trieste province was added after its cessation to Italy in 1954, it was granted limited autonomy in 1963. A Slav minority numbers about 100,000, and in Friuli there is a movement for complete independence.

Physical

The Friulian Plain stretches from the Adriatic coast, which is fringed with lagoons. Behind this extends a hilly region fronting the narrow wall of the Carnic Alps along the border with Austria. The chief rivers are the Tagliamento and lower Isonzo. There is considerable seismic activity in the area; in May 1976, an earthquake north of Udine killed over 1,000 people.
