Frobenius, Leo (1873–1938)

German ethnologist. He founded the Institute of Culture Morphology at Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 1925. From this unique foundation, devoted exclusively to Africa and Oceania, the German ethnologists Fritz Graebner (1877–1934) and Wilhelm Schmidt founded new schools of comparative anthropology in Vienna, Austria, and elsewhere. Frobenius's enthusiasm helped to spread knowledge of West African art and culture throughout Europe.

Frobenius was born in Berlin and studied at Basel. He led ten scientific expeditions to Africa and the Middle East between 1904 and 1932
