| In January 1944, to ensure the Fleet's assistance to the Land Forces in the liberation of the Baltic Region, the radio reconnaissance group of the seacoast radio detachment of the Baltic Red Banner Fleet was set up in Gdov, which, in cooperation with tactical reconnaissance, and with the shipcrews of the Lake Peipus (Chudskoe Ozero) Flotilla and with the frogmen, managed to obtain the critical information about the German flotilla on Lake Chudskoe. Starting with the famed Underwater Demolition Teams of WW II, the Navy trained its frogmen in all forms of land warfare, and then taught them to parachute into action, anywhere and anytime. Anyone who got sucked into watching had to find out not only if Evel's kid would make the jump, but also if on the landing he'd slide off the end of the ship and drop 70 feet into the shallow water where frogmen were supposedly waiting to rescue him. |
