Front Royal

Town and administrative headquarters of Warren County, north Virginia; population (1990) 11,900. It is located 32 km/20 mi south of Winchester and 97 km/60 mi west of Washington, DC, on the south fork of the Shenandoah River, in an apple growing region. It has a fruit packing industry and produces rayon and chemicals. It was settled in the 1780s. On 23 May 1862 Confederate forces under Stonewall Jackson took the town. Front Royal is the home of Randolph-Macon Academy.
