Frontenac, Louis de Buade, comte de Frontenac et Palluau

    0.01 sec.

Frontenac, Louis de Buade, comte de Frontenac et Palluau (1622–1698)

French colonial governor. He began his military career 1635, and was appointed governor of the French possessions in North America 1672. Although efficient, he quarrelled with the local bishop and his followers and was recalled 1682. After the Iroquois, supported by the English, won several military victories, Frontenac was reinstated 1689. He defended Québec against the English 1690 and defeated the Iroquois 1696.

During his first term of office he built Fort Frontenac (now Kingston, Ontario). In 1689 Frontenac replaced Denonville, the 11th governor-general.
