Frontinus, Sextus Julius

Frontinus, Sextus Julius (c. AD 40-103)

Roman writer and soldier, praetor (magistrate) AD 70. He wrote Strategemata/Stratagems, a book on the art of war, and De aquis urbis Romae/On the Water Supply of Rome, which contains a history and description of the water supply of Rome and other aspects of architecture. Both works have survived.

While he was governor of Britain AD 74-78, he conquered the Silures. In AD 97 he was nominated curator aquarum (chief commissioner of the water board) in Rome.
