Froude, James Anthony (1818-1894)

English historian whose History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada in 12 volumes (1856-70) was a classic Victorian work.

He was influenced by the Oxford Movement in the Church of England, in which his brother, Richard Hurrell Froude (1803-1836), collaborated with Cardinal Newman.
