Fry, Maxwell

Fry, (Edwin) Maxwell (1899–1987)

English architect and town-planner. He was a pioneer of the Modern Movement in Britain. Sun House, Hampstead, London (1935), with its horizontally banded windows and white stucco finish is typical of his work. Fry worked in partnership with Walter Gropius 1934–36, and with Denys Lasdun (among others) 1951–58. He was Le Corbusier's senior architect at Chandigarh, India, 1951–54.

Born in Wallasey, Merseyside, and educated at Liverpool University, he was town-planning adviser in West Africa, 1943–45, in partnership with his wife (Jane Drew). His other buildings include Kensal House flats, London (1937); educational buildings, Ghana (1946–53); and University College, Ibadan, Nigeria (1954).
