Fukui

City and capital of Fukui prefecture, Japan; population (2005) 269,100. Industries include silk and synthetic fibre textile production, food processing, and the manufacture of electrical machinery.

The city grew up around a castle dating from 1575, but had to be rebuilt after a major earthquake in the prefecture in June 1948 caused 12,000 casualties and killed 1,500 people. The nearby Eihei Temple (1244) is the administrative centre of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism.

Japan's first fast breeder reactor, at Tsuruga in Fukui prefecture, began supplying commercial energy in 1995.
