Fukushima

Fukushima

City in the north of Honshu island, Japan, on the Abukumagawa River, 255 km/158 mi north of Tokyo; population (2005) 290,900. It is the capital of Fukushima prefecture. It has a silk industry and is a centre for light engineering, textiles, milk processing, fruit canning, paper-making, and the manufacture of electrical appliances.

Fukushima is home to Fukushima University (1949); the Iizaka hot spring, which has natural water temperatures of 40°C/104°F–70°C/158°F; and a 15th-century castle.
