Funabashi

Industrial city in Chiba prefecture, Kanto region, Honshu island, 20 km/12 mi east of Tokyo, Japan; population (1994) 531,000. Industries include steel, timber, photochemicals, machinery, and food processing.

Before World War II, it grew as a centre for the manufacture of munitions. After the war, the city rapidly developed as a dormitory settlement for Tokyo commuters.
