Funan

Chinese name of an ancient state in southern Indochina, probably with its main centres in modern lower Cambodia.

Funan appears in Chinese sources, having sent a succession of embassies to the Chinese court, from the 3rd to 6th centuries AD. Its indigenous history and culture are not well-known, but it seems to have had wide trading contacts extending from China to India, and at one site a Roman-style lamp was found. By the 5th century, there is evidence of increasing cultural influence from India. But then the name disappears.
