In chemistry, a small number of atoms in an arrangement that determines the chemical properties of the group and of the molecule to which it is attached (for example, the carboxyl group COOH, or the amine group NH2). Organic compounds can be considered as structural skeletons, with a high carbon content, with functional groups attached.

Thousand Oaks, CA) has patented a process for separating a target protein (such as a recombinant protein produced in a cell culture) from a mixture containing the target protein and contaminants (such as cell culture contaminants), by contacting the mixture with a hydrophobic adsorbent comprising branched hydrocarbon functional groups in an aqueous salt solution and collecting the unbound flow-through fraction containing the target protein.
