functional group

In chemistry, a small number of atoms in an arrangement that determines the chemical properties of the group and of the molecule to which it is attached (for example, the carboxyl group COOH, or the amine group NH2). Organic compounds can be considered as structural skeletons, with a high carbon content, with functional groups attached.
