Fundy, Bay of

Canadian Atlantic inlet situated between northeast Maine and south New Brunswick and southwest Nova Scotia, Canada. It extends northeastwards for about 320 km/200 mi inland from the Gulf of Maine. In the northeast it divides into Chignecto Bay, to the north, and the Minas Basin, to the south. Fundy's fast-running tides, rising up to 18 m/60 ft, are the highest in the world; they have been harnessed for electricity since 1984. The rising tide creates ‘reversing falls’ at the mouth of the St John River, and the surge up the Petitcodiac River creates a tidal bore (surge of tidal water up an estuary or a river) at Moncton, New Brunswick. The bay is a rich fishing ground.
