funk

Dance music of black US origin, relying on heavy percussion in polyrhythmic patterns. Leading exponents include James Brown and George Clinton.

Initially used for a hard-bop jazz style and as a loose term of approbation in rhythm and blues, funk became a defined category in the 1970s as disco music geared to a black audience, less slick and mechanical than mainstream disco.
