Furneaux Islands

Group of islands off northeast Tasmania in the Bass Strait, included within the State of Tasmania. The largest island in the group is Flinders Island; population (1996) 924. Other islands are Cape Barren Island and Clarke Island. Fishing, grazing, and tourism are the main economic activities. Flinders Island is linked by air to Launceston and Melbourne.

The islands are popular for boating and water sports, as well as diving at the shipwrecks at Vansittart Island and Foochow Inlet. Searching for Flinders Island topaz (Killiecrankie diamonds) is also a popular tourist pastime. The islands are named after Tobias Furneaux, Captain Cook's lieutenant, the first European to visit the islands in 1773.
