Furness, Christopher (1852–1912)

English shipowner and shipbuilder, head of the shipping firm Furness, Withy, and Co. Ltd. He was Liberal member of Parliament for the Hartlepool constituency 1891–1910.

He was born at West Hartlepool, Durham, and started a ship-broking business when he was 24 years of age. He next established a line of steamers. He acquired an interest in the ship-building firm of Edward Withy and Co., and in 1891 the two were amalgamated.
