Fushun| City in Liaoning province, northeast China, 40 km/25 mi east of Shenyang; population (2000) 1,359,900. It is a coalmining and oil-refining centre with aluminium, iron, steel, engineering, oil-shale distillation, and chemical works. |
| The old walled city was built in 1669. Fushun's modern development was begun by the Russians in 1902 when they opened up its huge bituminous coal reserves, mined by open-cast methods. |
