Fushun

City in Liaoning province, northeast China, 40 km/25 mi east of Shenyang; population (2000) 1,359,900. It is a coalmining and oil-refining centre with aluminium, iron, steel, engineering, oil-shale distillation, and chemical works.

The old walled city was built in 1669. Fushun's modern development was begun by the Russians in 1902 when they opened up its huge bituminous coal reserves, mined by open-cast methods.
