Fussell, Charles C(lement) (1938– )

US composer and conductor. His music is largely traditional in scope and content. He founded the Group for New Music at the University of Massachusetts in 1974.

He studied at the Eastman School and with Boris Blacher in Berlin, Germany, and has taught at Boston University from 1981.

Works

Opera

Caligula (1962).

Orchestral

three symphonies (1963, 1964–67, 1978–81), Northern Lights for chamber orchestra (portraits of Janáček and Munch, 1979), Virgil Thomson Sleeping for chamber orchestra (1981).

Vocal

Cymbeline, romance for soprano, tenor, and ensemble (1983), A Song of Return for chorus and orchestra (1989), Wilde two monologues for baritone and orchestra (1990).

Instrumental

Last Trombones for five percussionists, two pianos, and six trombones (1990).
