Fouta Djallon

One of the largest continuous areas of highland over 1,000 m/3,280 ft in West Africa, comprising a series of sandstone plateaux extending north to south through central Guinea. The soil is thin on the plateau surfaces, but the deep valleys are forested and support a thriving agricultural population. The Fouta Djallon curve away southeast to form the boundaries between Guinea and Sierra Leone and Liberia, the whole being known as the Guinea Highlands, or the Dorsale Guinéenne, and forming the watershed between the tributaries of the Niger River and the rivers flowing directly to the Atlantic coast.
