Gál, Hans (1890-1987)

Austrian composer and musicologist. After the Anschluss (the annexation of Austria by Germany) he took refuge in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he was lecturer at the University 1945-57.

He was a pupil of Eusebius Mandyczewski in Vienna, Austria, and lectured at the university there from 1918; he later became director of the Music Academy in Mainz, Germany.

Opera

Der Fischer, Der Arzt der Sobeide (1919), Ruth, Die heilige Ente (1923), Das Lied der Nacht (1926), Die beiden Klaus, Der Zauberspiegel.

Choral

Requiem für Mignon (from Goethe's Wilhelm Meister, 1923) for chorus and orchestra, and other choral works.

Orchestral

Sinfonietta, Ballet Suite, Pickwickian Overture (after Dickens), and other pieces for orchestra; serenade for strings; piano concerto, violin concerto.

Chamber

four string quartets (1916-71), five intermezzi for string quartet, serenade for string trio; piano works.
