Gálvez, Juan Manuel (born 1887)

Honduran National Party politician, president 1949-54. A member of the right-wing National Party, he was elected in 1948 to succeed the dictator Tiburcio Carías Andino as president, assuming office in 1949.

Gálvez promoted economic development and diversification and road construction. His hostile attitude to labour organizations culminated in a violent general strike in 1954, spearheaded by banana workers.
