Gönnenwein, Wolfgang (1933- )

German conductor. He studied in Stuttgart and conducted the South German Madrigal Choir there from 1959, leading them on tours throughout Europe and South America. He was director of the Cologne Bach Choir 1969-73, and artistic director of the Ludwigsburg Castle Festivals from 1972, leading Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute, Fidelio, and Der Freischutz/The Marksman (1972-89). He was appointed general director of the Stuttgart State Theatre in 1985. His recordings include the Bach Passions and Magnificat, Haydn's Creation and Seasons, and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis.
