Gallup

Town and administrative headquarters of McKinley County, northwest New Mexico; population (2000) 20,200. It is situated on the Puerco River, 29 km/18 mi east of the Arizona state border. Lying between Navajo and Zuñi lands, it is a centre for American Indian culture and trade, especially in arts and crafts. The city is a shipping point for cattle, hides, and wool, and is engaged in uranium mining and light manufacturing. A branch of the University of New Mexico (1968) is in the town.

Once a stagecoach stop, later a construction centre for the Santa Fe Railroad, Gallup also prospered from coal exploration. The annual Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial is a major event in the local calendar.
