| But prosecutor William Hunter dropped the more serious charge of GBH with intent against Vainikolo, who had a highly successful career with Bradford Bulls before turning to Union with Gloucester and England. Passing sentence, Judge Guy Whitburn said it was "difficult to imagine" a worse case of GBH with intent than the one meted out to his 43-year-old victim. In the nine month period from April 2008 to January this year, there were 233 crimes recorded by Cleveland Police involving knives or similar bladed objects - that's about 25 such crimes each month These included three attempted murders, four threats to kill, 54 wounding offences or acts which endangered life, nine offences of causing GBH with intent and 120 offences of actual bodily harm or other injury. |
