Gabinius, Aulus

    0.03 sec.

Gabinius, Aulus (died 48/47 BC)

Roman general and provincial governor. As tribune 67 BC he proposed a law (the Lex Gabinia) which gave Pompey wide-ranging command against the Mediterranean pirates. As consul 58 BC, Gabinius supported the Roman politician Clodius in banishing the orator Cicero. He was governor of Syria 57–54 BC. When he retired from this office, he was accused of misgovernment and went into exile. He returned to support Julius Caesar in the civil war, and died on active service in the Roman province of Dalmatia.
