Gabriel, Ange-Jacques (1698–1782)

French architect, born in Paris, son of Jacques (Jules) Gabriel. He succeeded his father as Premier Architecte du Roi (First Architect to the King) in 1742, retiring in 1775. In that capacity he made alterations to the palaces of Versailles, Fontainebleau, Marly, Choisy and Compiégne; laid out the Place de la Concorde, Paris (1749–55); and designed the Ecole Royale Militaire (1751), the Petit Trianon, Versailles (1762–66), the Royal Opera House, Versailles (1748–70), and the Ministry of Marine (naval ministry) in Paris (1757–70).

He became surveyor at Versailles in 1735, with sole responsibility for decorative work on the palace.
