Gabriel, Jacques (Jules) (1667–1742)

French architect, born in Paris, son of the architect Jacques Gabriel, and father of Ange-Jacques Gabriel. He became Architecte du Roi (King's Architect) in 1687, and Premier Architecte (First Architect to the King) in 1735. Besides numerous bridges, he designed the facade of the cathedral at La Rochelle (1740); the Hôtel de Ville at Rennes (1734–43); the Archbishop's Palace at Blois (1725); and the Hôtels Biron and de Varangeville.
