Gabrilowich, Ossip Salomonovich (1878–1936)

Russian-born US pianist, conductor, and composer. He studied piano with Anton Rubinstein, and later at the St Petersburg Conservatory, where Liadov and Glazunov were among his masters. He finished his piano studies with Leschetizky in Vienna 1894–96, making his first appearance, in Berlin, in 1896. He toured widely in Europe and the USA, married the contralto Clara Clemens (daughter of Mark Twain) in 1908, and settled in New York as a US citizen in 1914. He was appointed conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1918.
