Gadsden

City and administrative headquarters of Etowah County, northeast Alabama, USA, on the Coosa River, 95 km/59 mi northeast of Birmingham; population (2000) 39,000. It is a distribution centre for the area's livestock, poultry, and dairy products. Industries include manganese, bauxite, coal, timber, steel, tyres, electrical machinery parts, and farm equipment. Gadsden State Community College (1965) is in the city.

The city was founded in 1846, and renamed in 1853 after the diplomat James Gadsden (who negotiated the Gadsden Purchase of territory from Mexico). It was incorporated as a city in 1871. In 1906 it became the site of one of the world's first hydroelectric projects.
