Gaffney

Town and administrative headquarters of Cherokee County, north South Carolina; population (1990) 13,100. It is located 29 km/18 mi northeast of Spartanburg, in the Piedmont. Originally called Gaffney's Old Field, after an Irish settler who arrived in 1803, it began as a resort for Low Country plantation owners who sought its mineral springs. A market centre for cotton and other crops, it grew when the Southern Railway reached the town in the 1870s. There are limestone quarries and textile plants. It is home to Limestone College (1845).
