Gainesville

City and administrative headquarters of Alachua County, north Florida, USA, 90 km/56 mi southwest of Jacksonville; population (2000) 95,400. The area produces beef cattle, poultry, and lumber; its industries include electronic parts, concrete, wooden products, and tourism. The University of Florida (1901), which includes the East Florida State Seminary (1853), is located in the city.

Gainesville developed around a trading post founded in 1832; it was incorporated as a city in 1907.
