Gairloch

Coastal village and resort in Wester Ross, Highland unitary authority, Scotland, on the north shore of Loch Gairloch, 95 km/59 mi from Dingwall; population (2001) 1,056. Sea-fishing and fish-processing are the principal industries. Sandy beaches and a local golf course encourage tourism.

Inverewe Garden, created in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie and owned by the National Trust for Scotland since 1952, lies to the northeast of Gairloch, on the shores of Loch Ewe. The sheltering effects of the Gulf Stream allow a range of imported exotic plants, including azalea and eucalyptus, to flourish in the garden, despite its lying at a more northerly latitude than Moscow.
