galactic coordinates

In astronomy, system for measuring the position of astronomical objects on the celestial sphere with reference to the galactic equator.

Galactic latitude (symbol b) is measured in degrees from the galactic equator (b = 0°) to the north (b = 90°) and south (b = − 90°) galactic poles.

Galactic longitude (symbol l) is measured in degrees eastward (l = 0° to 360°) from a fixed point in the constellation of Sagittarius that approximates to the centre of the Galaxy. Galactic coordinates are often used when astronomers are studying the distribution of material in the Galaxy.
