Galerius, Valerius Maximianus (c. AD 250–311)

Roman emperor from AD 305. He became emperor in the eastern part of the empire on the abdication of Diocletian.

Galerius was born in Thrace and served under the emperors Aurelian and Probus. He married Diocletian's daughter and in 293 Diocletian gave him the title of Caesar with jurisdiction over the province of Illyricum and the Danubian region. As eastern emperor he refused to recognize Maxentius as western emperor, and invaded Italy, where he was defeated by Maxentius 307 and lost Italy and Africa. Galerius's name is associated with the persecution of Christians under Diocletian.
