Gall, Joseph G(rafton) (1928– )

US cell biologist, who made a major contribution to the study of chromosome structure and function, nucleic acid metabolism, gene structure, and cellular organelles. A career academic, he has taught at the University of Minnesota (1952–64), been a professor at Yale (1964–83), and worked at the Carnegie Institution (since 1983), becoming American Cancer Society professor of developmental genetics in 1984. He was born in Washington, DC.
