Gallé, Emile (1846-1904)

French art nouveau glassmaker. He produced glass in sinuous forms or rounded, solid-looking shapes almost as heavy as stone, typically decorated with flowers or leaves in colour on colour.

After training in Europe, he worked at his father's glass factory and eventually took it over. He was a founder of the Ecole de Nancy, a group of French art nouveau artists who drew inspiration from his 1890s work and adopted his style of decoration and techniques.
