Gallatin

Town and administrative headquarters of Sumner County, north-central Tennessee; population (1990) 18,794. It is located to the north of the Cumberland River, and 40 km/25 mi northeast of Nashville. A burley tobacco and livestock market, with various light industries, it was founded in 1802. The Tennessee Valley Authority's Gallatin Steam Plant, 10 km/6 mi to the south-southeast, is a major employer for the area.
