Bibiena

Family of Italian architects who designed theatres and theatrical scenery in Italy, France, Austria, and the small princely court towns of Germany.

The principal members of the family were Francesco 1659-1739, who built theatres at Verona and Nancy, and his nephews Antonio 1700-74, who built theatres at Rome, Bologna, Siena, Mantua, Pistoia and Livorno; and Giuseppe Galli 1696-1757, who published many engravings of theatrical designs.

The principal members of the family were Francesco Bibiena (1659- 1739), who built theatres at Verona, Italy, and Nancy, France, and his nephews Antonio Bibiena (1700-1774), who built theatres at Rome, Bologna, Siena, Mantua, Pistoia, and Livorno in Italy, and Giuseppe Galli (1696-1757), who published many magnificent engravings of theatrical designs.

Giuseppe and Carlo Galli da Bibiena went on to design the first opera house at Bayreuth in 1748, the extraordinary Rococo Residenztheater, rivalled only by the even more extravagent Munich Residenztheater (I 752) by Jean Frangois de Cuvillits, which was bombed during the Second World War but subsequently rebuilt.
