Galliard, Johann Ernst (John Ernest) (c. 1680–1749)

Anglicized oboist and composer of French-German origin. He was a pupil of J B Farinelli and Steffani, and settled in England around 1706 as oboist to Prince George of Denmark. He was later active as a composer, especially for the theatre, and also translated Tosi's treatise on singing under the title Observations on the Florid Song (1742).

Works operas Calypso and Telemachus (1712), Pan and Syrinx (1718) and Oreste e Pilade (unfinished); several pantomimes and other stage entertainments; choruses for the Earl of Buckingham's Julius Caesar; The Hymn of Adam and Eve from Milton's Paradise Lost; church music; instrumental music, including piece for 24 bassoons and four double basses.
