Gallienus, Publius Licinius Egnatius (died AD 268)

Roman emperor from 260, and co-regent with his father, the emperor Valerian, from 253 until Valerian was captured by the Persians 260. As emperor, Gallienus was challenged by a number of usurpers (collectively known as the ‘thirty tyrants’). Aureolus, the most prominent, was proclaimed emperor in the Roman province Illyricum, invaded Italy, and captured Milan. While besieging him in Milan, Gallienus was murdered by his own troops. He was succeeded by Claudius II.
