Gallwitz, Max Karl Wilhelm von

    0.01 sec.

Gallwitz, Max Karl Wilhelm von (1852–1937)

German general. Gallwitz was attached to the General Staff 1883–85 and was appointed inspector general of field artillery 1911. In World War I, he served with Hindenburg on the Eastern Front and Mackensen in the conquest of Serbia. He then moved to the Western Front where he fought at the Somme and was defeated at Verdun. Temporarily relieved of his command late 1917, he was reinstated to command an Army Group on the Western Front 1918.

Although never famous, Gallwitz was a highly competent tactician and, apart from his defeat at Verdun, rarely put a foot wrong on the battlefield.
