Galveston County

County in southeast Texas; area 1,033 sq km/399 sq mi; population (1990) 217,400. It is bounded to the east and north by Galveston Bay, and to the south by the Gulf of Mexico. Its administrative headquarters is Galveston; Texas City and League City are among other municipalities. Including the Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston Island, it forms a major industrial and port area, with oil and natural gas fields, refineries, and chemical and sulphur plants. Shipbuilding and agricultural processing are also important, along with commercial fishing, especially shrimping. The coast has numerous resorts, and tourists are also drawn to Galveston's historic sites.
