Gamarra, Augustín (1786–1841)

Peruvian president 1829–33 and from 1839. His first period of rule saw chaos, and he went into exile, but was re-elected president 1839. He died during an attempted invasion of Bolivia.

Gamarra had emerged along with Andrés Santa Cruz (1792–1865) and José de La Mar (1776–1830) after the Battle of Ayacucho 1824, the last great contest in the struggle for independence in South America.
