Gambier Islands

Island group, part of French Polynesia, lying in the southeastern part of the Tuamotu Archipelago; area 36 sq km/14 sq mi; population (1996 est) 600. It includes four coral islands and many small islets. The main island is Mangaréva, with its town Rikitea. They were made a French colony in 1881. Copra is the chief commercial product, though there is also fishing for pearls.
