Gambill, Robert (1955– )

US tenor. He studied in Hamburg and made his debut at Geneva in 1977 as the Count of Lerma from Verdi's Don Carlos. In 1981 he appeared in Milan as Michael in the first performance of Stockhausen's Donnerstag aus Licht/Thursday from Light. He also sang at Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, then at Glyndebourne 1982–85 as Rossini's Almaviva and Don Ramiro. He performed in Venice in 1983 as Mozart's Ferrando, at Aix in 1984 as Lindoro, and as Wagner's Steersman at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1990. In Vienna in 1988 he sang in a revival of Schubert's Fierabras/The Braggart, under Abbado, and he was David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg/The Mastersingers of Nuremberg at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1990.
