García, Manuel

    0.06 sec.

García, Manuel (1775–1832)

Spanish vocalist (tenor) and composer. He appeared in his own and other musicians' operas in Cádiz, Madrid, Paris, and London. After a profitable tour in the USA in 1825, he was robbed of all his wealth whilst on his way to Vera Cruz. For the remainder of his life he taught singing in Paris, using the system advocated in his Metodi di canto.

His daughters, Maria Malibran (1808–1836) and Pauline Viardot (1821–1910), were also successful singers, and his son, Manuel García (1805–1906), was a respected singing teacher. He was professor at the Paris Conservatoire from 1842 and the Royal Academy of Music, London, from 1848; he also invented the laryngoscope in 1855.
